Umahi Kicks Against Slow Progress Of Ikorodu-Itoki Road Project


The Minister of Works inspected the Ikorodu-Itoki Road, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the slow progress of the project.

He directed that excavation and road improvements be carried out at night, with subgrade reinforced using a mix of lumps, stone base, and cement for seamless traffic flow.

The project will proceed section by section, with usable road material repurposed for building shoulders, while difficult areas will receive intensive engineering solutions later.

The Minister emphasised a results-focused approach, warning that non-compliance could lead to contractor termination and possible legal action, regardless of political consequences.

He urged all staff and contractors to prioritise solutions over problems, reinforcing that the project must meet deadlines to benefit the public and support the government’s objectives.

The Federal Ministry of Works has commissioned a CCTV monitoring centre on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, the first of its kind on any bridge in Nigeria.

The facility enables real-time surface and underwater surveillance to enhance safety and rapid emergency response.

Senator Dave Umahi, Minister of Works, commissioned the project on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

He said the initiative reflects the president’s commitment to securing federal roads and bridges nationwide.

The monitoring system will help control speeding, traffic violations, and security threats on the bridge.

Patrol vehicles and a surveillance boat have been deployed to support enforcement operations.

The commissioning marks the first phase of the project, with additional works to be completed later.

Umahi say the facility will serve as a model for similar installations across Nigeria’s major highways.

Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Engineer Olufemi Dare, said the project will reduce response time to incidents on the bridge.

The centre is powered mainly by solar energy with inverters, batteries, a transformer, and a standby generator.
